With a 3-0 record, Gardena Serra has earned their spot at 7th in the DigitalSports National Football Rankings. Thus far, however, they have not always had their work cut out for them, trailing twice in the fourth quarter in the past two games.
Serra met up against Notre Dame on Friday, September 13, in what soon became a very difficult game for the Cavaliers. Notre Dame struck first with field goals in the first and second quarters.
It was not until the fourth quarter that Serra finally found the endzone with a 15-yard rush from senior quarterback Jalen Greene to bring the game to a 6-6 tie.
The Knights took back the lead in their next drive with a touchdown, 13-6. The next play, Serra responded with an 80-yard connection from Greene to senior receiver Adoree Jackson.
The two teams went into overtime tied 13-13. Finally, in double-overtime, Greene found Jackson again for a 25-yard score. After a hard fought game, the Cavaliers won 20-13.
Now at 3-0, Serra still has a lot to work on. Their low depth in the halfback position makes it difficult for the offense to gain yards on the ground.
Serra’s defense has been excellent, thus far. If not for them, the Notre Dame game could have taken a completely different turn. The defense acquired eight sacks and an interception in the game.
The Cavaliers now move on to face Dorsey High School on Friday, September 20. The opening kickoff is at 7:00 at Serra High School.
